(a monster project!)
This undoubtable was an epic project. I was the firm’s Principal Associate Director Architect responsible for day–to–day documentation, coordination and site supervision.
There were persistent difficulties arising from some of the basic management decisions in that the documentation was to be ‘fast–tracked’. This meant instead of all drawings being complete prior to construction starting, the drawings were progressively released to site just before work commenced on the next particular stage of the works. Experience has shown that this is not the way to achieve the best outcomes.
Other major complications included:
- the form of contract that was used.
- the need to retain the existing basement of the mail exchange building the rest of which was to be demolished and the consequent mismatch in column grid spacing.
