The construction of the Gilles Street Centre was an official SA Jubilee 150 project for 1986. All design, construction and fit out services were provided free of charge and the project was coordinated by the Master Builders Association on behalf of the Building Construction Industry of South Australia.
The project received Government funding since it was an ‘umbrella’ organisation for all disabilities, some 350 of them who had registered, and so the design had to accommodate the specific requirements of all these disabilities. There were also constraints relating to the fact that professional assistance and the fit out of all items were provided free.
